The Oversight That Could End Your Vacation Before It Begins

Two Travel Tips You Can’t Afford to Overlook

Travel has always been exciting, but let’s be honest—it has changed so much over the last few years. Ever since COVID, the rules and requirements around travel seem to shift more often than we’d like. That’s why, as much as I love the fun and anticipation of planning a vacation, there’s one thing I tell every traveler and that is to do your homework before you go.

It doesn’t matter how experienced a traveler you may think you are, skipping this step can cause major headaches—and in some cases, even cost you your vacation. Keep in mind just because you may have been there last year, doesn’t mean things are the same this year. Guidelines are constantly changing.

So, here is a travel tip I want you to remember?

Double-check entry requirements for your destination.

Entry, Visa or Tourist Fees

Many countries have started implementing a type of entry fee (though they may call it by a different name). These fees aren’t usually large amounts, but they are important—and almost always need to be paid online before you travel. Once paid, they’re typically attached electronically to your passport, though some destinations may require you to print a confirmation or show a QR code when passing through customs.

It’s also important to note that some countries require these forms to be completed within a certain number of days prior to arrival. In smaller islands especially, approvals may be processed manually, which can take extra time. Leaving it until the last minute could mean your approval doesn’t come through in time. These systems aren’t just about fees—they’re also a way for destinations to track tourist arrivals and plan resources accordingly.

So, give yourself plenty of time, always use an official government website for the most up-to-date information, and don’t risk being denied boarding before your trip even begins.

Passport Validity

This one is also crucial. Different countries have different rules in place when it comes to passport validity. Some only require that your passport be valid for the length of your stay, while others require anywhere from three or even six months validity—beyond your expected return date. I’ve seen travelers denied entry because their passport was valid for 5.5 months when the destination required 6 months validity. Can you just imagine the heartbreak of being turned away, not because of your flights, hotels, or documents, but because of a simple oversight that could have been avoided.

My advice? Once you have decided on a destination for your next vacation, always check your passport’s expiration date and your destination’s entry requirements well before you travel. It only takes a few minutes but can save you from disappointment, stress, and lost money.
