There is something magical about islands and there are many islands around the world but I wanted to share just 6 for now that are definitely worth exploring.
Maybe it is the feeling of slowing down, hearing the ocean before you even see it, or discovering a place that feels completely different from home. Every island has its own personality, its own culture, and its own way of leaving a lasting impression.
With so many beautiful islands around the world you may be dreaming about your next adventure, so here are six incredible islands that deserve a spot on your bucket list. Each one offers something completely different, making it easy to find the one that speaks to you.
“The island where the water almost doesn’t look real.”
Bora Bora is often the first destination people think of when they imagine paradise, and it’s easy to understand why. The brilliant turquoise lagoon, iconic overwater bungalows, and dramatic volcanic peaks create scenery that almost feels too beautiful to be real.
But beyond the luxury is a peaceful island where you can snorkel with colourful tropical fish, take a sunset cruise across the lagoon, explore by boat, or simply relax while surrounded by one of the most breathtaking landscapes on Earth.
If you’ve ever wanted to experience the definition of “once in a lifetime,” Bora Bora certainly delivers.
Travel Tip:
Bora Bora is every bit as breathtaking as you’ve imagined, but it’s also one of the world’s most sought-after destinations. Planning 10 to 12 months in advance gives you the best selection of flights, resorts, and those iconic overwater bungalows that often sell out first.
“Where every sunset feels like a celebration.”
Santorini has a way of capturing your heart before you even arrive. Whitewashed buildings cling to dramatic cliffs, blue-domed churches overlook the sparkling Aegean Sea, and narrow pathways invite you to wander without any particular destination in mind.
Spend your days exploring charming villages, tasting local wines, visiting ancient archaeological sites, or relaxing at unique volcanic beaches.
And then there are the sunsets. As the sky turns shades of gold, pink, and orange, you’ll quickly understand why people travel from around the world just to witness the evening light over Santorini.
Travel Tip:
If your schedule allows, consider visiting in May, early June, or September. You’ll still enjoy beautiful weather, but with fewer crowds than the height of summer, making it much easier to explore the charming villages and enjoy those famous sunset views.
“An island where every day can be a different adventure.”
Maui offers the perfect balance between relaxation and exploration.
One day you might be driving the famous Road to Hana, stopping at waterfalls and lush rainforests. The next, you could be watching the sunrise from Haleakalā National Park or enjoying an afternoon on one of the island’s beautiful beaches.
During the winter months, Maui also becomes one of the world’s best places for whale watching, making every boat excursion feel like something truly special.
Whether you’re looking for adventure, incredible scenery, or simply time to unwind, Maui has a little bit of everything.
Travel Tip:
Many visitors focus on the beaches, but don’t miss sunrise or sunset at Haleakalā National Park. Reservations are required for sunrise, so it’s worth planning ahead. If you’re visiting between December and April, be sure to include a whale watching excursion. It’s an experience you’ll never forget.
“A destination that feeds both the soul and the senses.”
Bali offers so much more than beautiful beaches.
Here you’ll discover ancient temples, emerald rice terraces, colourful markets, traditional villages, and a culture that welcomes visitors with genuine warmth. Wellness retreats, yoga, incredible dining, and luxurious villas all blend together to create an experience that feels both relaxing and inspiring.
Whether you’re exploring Ubud’s lush countryside or enjoying the coastline, Bali has a way of helping you slow down and appreciate life’s simple moments.
It’s one of those places that many travellers visit once and immediately start planning a return trip.
Travel Advisor Tip:
Bali offers a wonderful variety of experiences, so consider splitting your stay between two areas. Spend a few nights in the peaceful countryside around Ubud before finishing your vacation at one of Bali’s beautiful beach resorts. You’ll experience two completely different sides of the island.
“Small in size, unforgettable in charm.”
Capri has been attracting visitors for generations, and it’s easy to see why.
Located just off Italy’s Amalfi Coast, this elegant island combines dramatic cliffs, colourful gardens, luxury boutiques, and spectacular Mediterranean views. Stroll through the charming streets, sip an espresso in a lively piazza, or take a boat into the famous Blue Grotto, where sunlight transforms the water into an incredible glowing blue.
Capri is proof that you don’t need a large island to make a lasting impression.
Travel Tip:
Capri is often visited as a day trip, but staying overnight lets you experience the island after the cruise visitors leave. The evenings become wonderfully relaxed, and you’ll enjoy a completely different atmosphere while wandering the charming streets.
“Nature at its most spectacular.”
Known as the Garden Isle, Kauai is a paradise for anyone who loves nature.
Towering emerald cliffs, cascading waterfalls, dramatic coastlines, and lush valleys create scenery unlike anywhere else in Hawaii. Much of the island has remained beautifully untouched, giving visitors the opportunity to experience Hawaii in a quieter, more natural setting.
Whether you’re hiking through Waimea Canyon, cruising along the breathtaking Nā Pali Coast, kayaking rivers, or simply relaxing on a peaceful beach, Kauai reminds you that some of the world’s greatest treasures are found in nature.
Travel Tip:
Kauai is perfect for travellers who appreciate nature, but remember that many of its most spectacular sights are spread across the island. Renting a car gives you the freedom to discover hidden beaches, scenic lookouts, waterfalls, and hiking trails at your own pace.
Which Island Speaks to You?
The beauty of travel is that no two destinations leave us feeling exactly the same.
Some inspire adventure. Others encourage us to slow down. Some amaze us with breathtaking scenery, while others capture our hearts through their culture and traditions.
Whether you’re planning your first bucket list vacation or adding another dream destination to your growing list, each of these islands offers memories that will stay with you long after you’ve returned home.
Aileen’s Travel Tip: Every island has its own personality. Some are perfect for adventure, others invite you to slow down and reconnect with nature, and some simply make you stop and say, “Wow.” The best island isn’t necessarily the one everyone else is visiting. It’s the one that matches the kind of memories you want to create. That’s my favourite part of helping clients plan their vacations. Finding the island that feels like it was made just for them.
So now I’m curious…
