Why Travel Insurance is something you should never skip

Why Travel Insurance Is Something You Should Never Skip

Let’s have a little heart-to-heart for a moment…

When we plan a vacation, we picture the good stuff, like the sunshine, the laughter, the beautiful dinners, the memories we’ll talk about for years.

What we don’t picture? Are things going sideways.

But the truth is… sometimes they do.

And I’ve seen it firsthand.

I’ve had a client break her foot during a cruise excursion, something as simple as a step gone wrong. Another client had a fall while playing pickleball on vacation. These aren’t extreme or even rare situations… they’re everyday moments that just happen to occur far from home.

And when they do, everything changes.

Suddenly, you’re not thinking about your next excursion, you’re trying to figure out where to go for help, how much it’s going to cost, and what happens next.

That’s where travel insurance becomes more than just an “extra cost.”
It becomes your safety net.

Why Your Coverage at Home Isn’t Enough

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is:
“But I have medical coverage here in Canada, so I should be fine, right?”

Not quite.

Out-of-country medical costs can be very expensive, and your provincial coverage only pays a small portion of those expenses (if anything at all). A hospital visit, emergency treatment, or even something as simple as an X-ray can add up quickly.  Just like my pickle ball client who ended up with a hospital bill of $34,000.00.  Thankfully he had Emergency Medical insurance, and it did not cost him anything.

And the last thing you want when you’re already feeling vulnerable… is financial stress on top of it.

The Types of Travel Insurance You Should Know About

Let me break this down in a simple way so you feel confident and informed:

Emergency Medical Insurance
This is the big one. It covers things like hospital stays, doctor visits, prescriptions, and emergency care while you’re away. If something unexpected happens, this is what protects you from those overwhelming medical bills.

Trip Cancellation / “Cancel for Any Reason” Coverage
Life happens. Sometimes things come up before you even leave, like health issues, family emergencies, or unexpected situations. This type of coverage allows you to cancel your trip and recover your costs, depending (of course) on your policy.

Comprehensive Insurance
This is your all-in-one option and often what I recommend most. It typically includes:

  • Emergency medical
  • Trip cancellation and interruption
  • Lost or delayed luggage
  • Travel delays

It’s designed to cover the full journey, from the moment you book to the moment you return home.

Purchase your Travel Insurance Policy before you leave on vacation.

Know What’s Covered… and What’s Not

This is a big one, and something I always stress with my clients.

Not all policies are created equal.

It’s so important to understand:

  • What is covered
  • What isn’t covered
  • Any pre-existing condition clauses
  • Activity exclusions (yes…even things like excursions or sports can matter)

The more you know ahead of time, the more confident and protected you’ll feel.

Peace of Mind Is Priceless

Here’s the honest truth…

Skipping insurance might save you a little money upfront, for sure BUT it can cost you so much more if something goes wrong.

Travel insurance isn’t just about protecting your investment.
It’s about protecting you.

It means having support when you need it most.
It means having someone to guide you through a stressful situation.
And it means you can focus on getting better or simply getting home without the added worry.

From My Heart to Yours…

I never want my clients to feel alone or unprepared when they travel.

Vacations should be joyful, relaxing, and full of beautiful memories and not stress or uncertainty.

So, if there’s one travel tip I can gently encourage you to take to heart, it’s this:

Please don’t skip the insurance.

Because while we can’t plan for the unexpected… we can be prepared for it.
