The Best Vacations Begin Long Before You Pack Your Suitcase

When people think about planning a vacation, they often picture boarding the plane, arriving at a beautiful resort, or watching the sunset with a tropical drink in hand. Those moments are certainly special, but I have always believed that one of the very best parts of a vacation happens long before you ever leave home.

It’s the anticipation.

In fact, it’s one of the reasons I personally love booking my own vacations well in advance. Once a trip is on the calendar, I have months of excitement ahead of me. I find myself counting down the days, imagining what each destination will be like, and dreaming about those moments that are still to come. That anticipation brings a little spark of joy into everyday life.

I think many couples underestimate just how valuable that feeling can be.

Life has a way of filling every day with responsibilities. Work schedules, household chores, appointments, family commitments, and endless to-do lists can leave very little room for simply enjoying each other’s company. Before long, conversations become focused on what needs to get done next instead of what you’re looking forward to together.

Day to day life can get overwhelming so why not escape it.

Planning a vacation changes that.

Suddenly, you’re talking about whether you’d rather relax on a quiet beach in Antigua or explore the lush rainforests of St. Lucia. You’re browsing resort photos together, deciding which excursions sound the most exciting, and imagining yourselves sharing dinner beside the ocean as the sun sets over the Caribbean.

Those conversations matter.

They remind you that you’re not just managing life together. You’re creating memories together.

Even the little moments become part of the experience. Shopping for a new swimsuit, renewing your passport, picking out books to read by the pool, or deciding which restaurant you’ll try first all become shared moments of anticipation. They give you something positive to talk about and something exciting to look forward to.

There is something incredibly powerful about having a date on the calendar that belongs just to the two of you.

It doesn’t matter whether your trip is six weeks away or six months away. Every time you see that departure date getting closer, you’re reminded that you’ve intentionally made time for each other.

As a travel advisor, I often encourage couples to start planning earlier than they think they need to. Of course, booking ahead often provides better availability and a wider selection of resorts and room categories. But there’s another reason I believe it’s worth planning early.

The longer you have to anticipate your vacation, the longer you get to enjoy it.

The vacation doesn’t begin when you board the plane.

It begins the moment you decide to dream together.

If you’ve been talking about taking that romantic escape “someday,” perhaps this is your gentle reminder that someday doesn’t have to stay someday. Pick a destination that excites you, choose a date that gives you something to look forward to, and start dreaming together.

Because sometimes the happiest part of the journey begins with simply having something wonderful waiting for you on the horizon.

Aileen’s Travel Tip

One of my favourite traditions is creating a simple vacation countdown. Whether it’s on your phone, your kitchen calendar, or a small chalkboard at home, watching those days count down together is a wonderful reminder that your next adventure, and time together, is getting closer every day.

Until next time,

Aileen ❤️
